Alvin G. Davis (1927-2022) was a cowboy poet, sculptor, and Western historian from Post, Texas.
Davis attended Texas Tech, receiving his Bachelor of Science in Animal Production in 1953. At Texas Tech, Davis was president of the Tech 4-H Club and Tech Rodeo Association. In 1952, he formed the American Junior Rodeo Association (AJRA), one of the first youth rodeo organizations in the nation. Davis was also Chairman of the American Cowboy Culture Association, and he founded and served on the Corporate Board for the National Cowboy Symposium and Celebration. A few of Davis’ awards include the Outstanding Animal Husbandry Alumni Award, Distinguished Alumni Award, a commemorative bronze bust of Davis outside of the Animal and Food Sciences building, and the “Alvin G. Davis Room” at the Garza County Historical Museum in Post, Texas. Additionally, he was the first inductee to the Texas Tech Rodeo Hall of Fame, named honorary Masked Rider in 2004, and in 2010, he was inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame. Davis has since written a poetry book and children’s book, A Day in the Life of a Cowboy.
Alvin Davis was inducted into the West Texas Walk of Fame in 2003.
