Thomas Leslie “Snuff” Garrett was a 1950s TV personality and record producer from Lubbock, Texas.
Born in Dallas, Garrett dropped out of high school and became a disc jockey in Lubbock. Although he had never truly learned an instrument, he became one of the most vital music producers in Los Angeles in the 1960s and 70s. In 1959, Garrett was hired as a staff producer at Liberty Records, where he produced songs for artists such as Bobby Vee, Walter Brennen, and Gary Lewis & the Playboys. After leaving Liberty, Garrett produced hits for the duo, Sonny & Cher, as well as solo Cher productions. In the 1970s, he worked with Vicki Lawrence, Tanya Tucker, Brenda Lee, and Roy Rogers for MCA Records. After being inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in November of 2015, he passed away in his Arizona home about a month later.
“Snuff” Garrett was inducted into the West Texas Walk of Fame in 1991.
